Linux Systems Engineer — Compute & Storage

Full-time

Infrastructure Engineering · Remote (US/EU time zones) · Posted 2026-05-18

We operate a fleet of bare-metal Linux servers across multiple colocation facilities. We need a systems engineer who understands the kernel well enough to explain why iowait spiked after that last ZFS scrub, and who can build infrastructure automation that survives a data center outage.

Responsibilities

  • — Manage bare-metal Linux fleet: provisioning, kernel tuning, security hardening, and lifecycle management
  • — Own ZFS storage pools: dataset layout, snapshot schedules, scrub monitoring, performance tuning, capacity planning
  • — Build and maintain infrastructure automation in Python and Ansible — zero-click provisioning for new nodes
  • — Operate monitoring stack: Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, alerting rules, SLO dashboards
  • — Manage container runtime: Docker, containerd, image lifecycle, resource constraints, security profiles
  • — Participate in on-call rotation (1 week per 6 weeks) with structured incident response and blameless postmortems

Requirements

  • — 5+ years of Linux systems administration in production environments
  • — Deep ZFS knowledge: pool topology, dataset properties, send/receive, snapshot management, performance analysis
  • — Strong Python scripting for automation — Ansible, Salt, or similar configuration management experience
  • — Experience with bare-metal provisioning: PXE, IPMI, firmware management, hardware diagnostics
  • — Understanding of Linux networking: iptables/nftables, routing, VLANs, BGP basics, tcpdump/Wireshark analysis
  • — Comfort with observability tooling: Prometheus metrics design, Grafana dashboards, structured logging

Nice to Have

  • — Experience with Ceph, GlusterFS, or other distributed storage systems
  • — Familiarity with kernel tracing: eBPF, bpftrace, perf, ftrace
  • — Knowledge of SELinux policy writing and debugging
  • — Experience managing hardware security: TPM, Secure Boot, measured boot, firmware attestation
